Home Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Gutters Clear Year-Round

Your home’s gutters are one of those features that go unnoticed until there’s a problem with them. When they’re efficiently and effectively directing water from your roof to your downspouts, all is well. When they get clogged with natural debris or other objects, you risk water damage to your house. Keeping your gutters free and clear from blockages is essential.

Some Basics About Gutters and Downspouts

Besides issues with clogging, homeowners should also be sure their gutters are hung properly and their downspouts are working as they should be.

Be aware that it often doesn’t take a large quantity of debris to clog gutters and downspouts. As many as two to three leaves can wreak havoc and prevent water from running safely to the downspout opening.

Even if you don’t have trees directly next to your house, you could end up with leaves and twigs in your gutters. Leaves from trees as far as 150 feet away from your home could easily land on your roof and make their way into your gutters.

Ignore Your Gutters; Flirt with Disaster.

Overflowing gutters can result in water accumulating around the exterior of your home’s foundation. That in turn could lead to unwanted water in your basement which could cause damage to your personal property and unhealthy mold problems.

Clogged gutters can also cause water to pool in areas of your roof where it can seep into your home and cause structural damage and mold issues.

How to Keep Your Gutters Clean

Ideally, homeowners should aim to clean their gutters at least twice per year as basic general maintenance. But depending on where a house is located, gutters may need to be cleaned more often because they’re exposed to more leaves, twigs, and other materials (like Match Box cars and tennis balls!) that could likely block them.

Another option for keeping gutters unobstructed is to install gutter guards. Zimmerman Exteriors can do that for you. Our customers have found gutter guards to be a very worthwhile investment. With gutter guards, you don’t have to worry about regularly cleaning your gutters (they are nearly 100% effective in keeping gutters from clogging). The cost to install them is quite reasonable – especially when compared to what you’d typically pay to have someone clean your gutters for you. Also, you don’t necessarily have to install gutter guards on all gutters of your home. Sometimes just placing them on the higher runs of your spouting can help immensely.

If you’re looking for an easier and more effective way to keep your gutters clean, contact Zimmerman Exteriors for an estimate on gutter guards for your house. We’ll be happy to assess your needs and provide you with recommendations.
